Rik Panganiban has over 15 years of experience as a nonprofit organizer and educator using digital media to increase public engagement on important global issues, from the International Criminal Court to Internet Governance to the Millenium Development Goals. He currently manages the online community of the Nonprofit Commons in Second Life. Prior to that, he was the assistant director of the Online Leadership Program at Global Kids, where he spearheaded innovative education projects using virtual worlds, games, and social media, targeting at-risk youth.
In 2007, Rik authored the report "Best Practices for Nonprofits in Second Life," still one of the definitive resources for public sector organizations working in virtual worlds. He also runs the website http://betterverse.org, a chronicle of the public good applications of virtual worlds for nonprofits, education and government.
Here's links to some presentations and workshops that I have done:
- NetSquared Conference (video)
- Lecture at New School (notes)
- Moderating Discussion with ICC Prosecutor and former Canadian Foreign Minister in Second Life (machinima video)
If these kinds of topics are of interest to you, you can book me to present it at your event. I'm always enthusiastic to speak with new audiences about the public good sector in virtual worlds, whether it's an academic symposium, tech-oriented convention or nonprofit conference. Contact me at rik-at-betterverse.org if you'd like to discuss this.
