The city of Singapore has recently launched a new virtual world called "Singapore 2010 Odyssey" to "provide a platform for youths around the world to stay connected in a fun
and interactive way while learning more about the Olympic values." The virtual world was launched in conjunction with the Singapore Youth Olympic Games taking place in August.
The press release describes the world as "similar to Second Life" where users can create avatars, walk, fly, and network with others. The organizers hope that by networking with other youth from around the world, they will learn the Olympic values of "Respect, Friendship and Excellence."
"The fact that you are meeting people from different cultures is itself a learning experience. If you don't learn the value of respect, no one will talk to you," said Dr Francis Chong, of the Singapore Youth Olympics organizing committee. Online games, multimedia content and social activities will also help educate youth members "in a way that is not boring," according to Dr. Chong.
Also similar to Second Life will be the ability to create content in-world, including 3d buildings.
